On December 9, 2025, in Nairobi, JAMAA Grands Lacs had the honor of being recognized at a regional ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace, and Security. This recognition honors a longstanding commitment to the social and community reintegration of young people affected by armed conflict in the Great Lakes region, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Organized on the sidelines of the regional conference “Ten Years of UNSCR 2250: Reflections and Renewed Commitments for Africa,” this event honored organizations led by young people or working directly for and with youth. The initiative, led by the Office of the United Nations Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region, in partnership with UNFPA, UNDP, and UNICEF, aims to promote innovative approaches to peacebuilding led by young people.
A vision rooted in dignity and social transformation
Through its actions, JAMAA Grands Lacs has been supporting young people affected by armed conflict for several years, particularly former children associated with armed forces and groups, and women and girls who are survivors of sexual violence, in their personal reconstruction, community reintegration, and civic participation. This regional award recognizes an approach based on human dignity, listening, resilience, and local leadership.
In a context marked by security challenges and persistent social crises, this recognition reinforces the conviction that young people are not only victims of conflict, but also key players in lasting peace.
Shared recognition, renewed commitment
Alongside other inspiring organizations from the Great Lakes region, JAMAA Great Lakes took part in this celebration of innovation, diversity, and inclusion in peace processes. The initiatives honored demonstrate the richness of youth responses in key areas such as social cohesion, conflict prevention, livelihoods, technology, and community resilience.
For JAMAA Grands Lacs, this regional distinction is above all a collective encouragement: that of the communities supported, the young leaders engaged in the field, and the partners and allies who believe in peace built in a participatory and inclusive manner.
Looking ahead
As Resolution 2250 enters its second decade of implementation, JAMAA Great Lakes reaffirms its commitment to amplify the voices of young people, strengthen their role in local peace dynamics, and actively contribute to a more just and stable future in the Great Lakes region.
This recognition in Nairobi is not an end in itself, but a major step in a collective journey towards peace led by and for young people.
